Stress is a part of life, and a little of it can keep us sharp and moving forward. When it lingers, though, it wears down body and spirit. These five tips will help you meet pressure with more calm, and remind you that you have more say in how you respond than you might think.

Why stress deserves your care
Stress is both a physical and an emotional response. When it stays high for long stretches, it can affect sleep, mood and health, so learning healthy ways to manage it is an act of self care. We cannot remove every source of pressure. What we can do is change how we meet it, because our thoughts and attitudes play a big part in how heavy a stressful moment feels. If your stress feels overwhelming or does not ease, please talk with a doctor or counselor. Asking for help is a sign of strength.
1. Identify what stresses you
Make a list of the situations that leave you tense or uneasy, then sort it into two columns: what you can change and what you cannot.
- What you can change: waking a little earlier, finishing tasks ahead of deadlines, saying no, or sharing the load instead of carrying everything yourself.
- What you cannot change: traffic jams, a crowded elevator, other people's moods. Practice letting these go.
Your energy is precious. Spend it where it can make a difference.
2. Calm down in the moment
Take a few minutes to reset. Wash your face with cool water. Breathe slowly and deeply, then notice where you are holding tension and soften it. Listen to soothing music, step outside, or call a friend and talk it through. Sharing what is on your heart is one of the healthiest things you can do.
3. Remember that this will pass
Every stressful moment ends. When you remind yourself of this, your emotions settle and you can think clearly about the best next step instead of spending your energy on worry.
4. Know yourself
Ask what truly triggers your anxiety. Is it a deadline, a person, a lack of rest, or a situation that no longer fits? If work is the main source, think about what could make it lighter, such as taking real time off, setting limits or asking for support. For larger changes, give yourself time to think and plan.
5. Use your relaxation response
Just as the body has a stress response, it also has a natural relaxation response. You can call it up on purpose. Here is a simple way:
- Choose a short word, sound or phrase, such as "calm," "love," "Om" or a favorite prayer, or a repetitive movement such as gentle yoga, walking or knitting.
- Sit quietly and repeat it softly with your breath.
- When other thoughts appear, let them go and return to your word.
- Continue for ten to fifteen minutes, once or twice a day.
Over time, practice makes the calm easier to reach. If you are new to this, Meditation in 5 Easy Steps is a gentle starting point, and How Positive Affirmations Help Manage Stress pairs well with it.
Where your attention goes, energy follows
The more we replay a worry, the bigger it can feel. When you notice yourself looping, turn your attention to something steadying, such as your breath, a kind thought or the next small task. You cannot be fully tense and fully relaxed at the same time, so every moment you choose calm is a moment that stress loses its grip.
