Receiving feedback calmly

Feedback can sting, even when it is fair. Listen for the data first: the specific observation or suggestion, separate from tone and delivery.

Keep your dignity. You can thank someone for their input without agreeing with every word, and you can ask clarifying questions without defending yourself.

Choose what to use. Some feedback will be immediately helpful, some will need time to consider, and some may not fit. Receiving feedback quietly lets you learn without losing your footing.

Use a feedback sorting page

After a performance review, you feel overwhelmed by the comments. Some feel fair, others feel harsh, and you are not sure what to do with them.

Write each piece of feedback on a page. Sort them into three groups: useful now, consider later, and does not fit. Choose one item from the useful now group to act on this week.

Notice how sorting feedback helps you respond calmly. You can learn from feedback without being overwhelmed by it.
