Color has long been used in spiritual traditions as a way to focus intention, and each chakra is linked with a color of the rainbow. A chakra tonic is a simple drink made with naturally colored, whole ingredients that match a chakra, sipped slowly as a small ritual. The drink is a reminder and an offering: as you taste the red of beets or the blue of butterfly pea flowers, you bring your attention to that energy center and its intention. These are not cures. They are mindful, nourishing rituals that turn an everyday drink into a moment of presence.

Seven drinks, seven colors, seven intentions.

Seven elegant glasses of colorful drinks in a perfect rainbow row on a sunlit marble counter, from deep ruby red to violet

A gentle note: Ingredients like turmeric, ginger, beet and caffeine-containing teas may not suit everyone, especially in pregnancy, with kidney stones or when taking medicines such as blood thinners. Please check with a trusted practitioner if you have any health conditions.

The seven tonics

Root: ruby beet tonic

Blend 1 small cooked beet, 1 apple, a thin slice of fresh ginger and 1 cup water. Strain if you like.

Intention while sipping: "I am safe and grounded."

Sacral: sunrise orange

Blend the juice of 2 oranges with 1 small carrot and a little water, or simply juice them.

Intention: "I enjoy my life and honor my feelings."

Solar plexus: golden lemon tonic

Warm 1 cup water, add the juice of half a lemon, ¼ teaspoon turmeric, a pinch of black pepper and a teaspoon of honey.

Intention: "I am confident and capable."

Heart: green garden cooler

Blend half a cucumber, a handful of mint, a handful of spinach and 1 cup water with lime. Or whisk ½ teaspoon matcha in warm water.

Intention: "I give and receive love freely."

Throat: blue flower tea

Steep 1 teaspoon dried butterfly pea flowers in hot water for 5 minutes. Add honey. Butterfly pea gives a deep natural blue.

Intention: "I speak my truth with kindness."

Third eye: indigo blueberry

Blend ½ cup blueberries with a pinch of culinary lavender and 1 cup water or milk of choice.

Intention: "I see clearly and trust my insight."

Crown: violet magic

Make the blue butterfly pea tea, then squeeze in lemon and watch it turn violet as the acidity changes. It is a little miracle in a glass.

Intention: "I trust the Divine and the flow of life."

How to sip as a ritual

  1. Make it slowly and with attention.
  2. Hold the glass to the chakra for a breath.
  3. Say the intention aloud or silently.
  4. Sip slowly, noticing color, taste and temperature.
  5. Give thanks to the plants and the earth.

You might drink one tonic each day of the week, starting with the root on Monday, or choose the chakra you most need.
