Original Infused Lights teaching diagram for rest over revenge
An original Infused Lights teaching diagram.

Rest creates distance between injury and the decision that follows

The wish for revenge often contains a wish for recognition. You want the other person to understand the cost, feel the imbalance, or lose the power to define the story. Naming that need can be more useful than shaming the anger. Rest does not excuse the injury. It gives judgment time to separate protection from an action that may create a new harm.

A cooling interval is not passive when it includes clear observation. Record the facts, identify what access needs to change, and notice what support is available. Delay may be unsafe when immediate protection is needed, so rest should never be used to tell someone to remain in danger. The goal is a response that protects life, dignity, and future options.

If the seeing makes you superior, put the lamp down.
“If the seeing makes you superior, put the lamp down.”

Boundaries and consequences can be firm without becoming punishment. End contact, document an incident, seek advice, ask for accountability, or use formal channels when appropriate. These choices address conditions. Revenge often keeps attention tied to the person who caused the injury and asks your future to keep orbiting their behavior.

Rest also includes recovery from the body cost of anger. Food, sleep, movement, trusted company, and a quieter environment can return some choice to the system. You may still decide to confront, report, leave, or grieve. The difference is that the decision belongs to your values and safety rather than to the hottest moment.

A rest before response practice for this week

Imagine reading a dismissive comment from a coworker in a group chat at ten at night. The perfect cutting reply starts writing itself, and it feels urgent to send it before you sleep. The urgency is real, but it is not wisdom.

Try this when a hurt makes you want to strike back. First, write the reply you want to send, but put it in a note, not the chat. Second, do one restful thing, like a shower, a short walk, or sleep. Third, the next day, ask what outcome you actually want: respect, distance, repair, or clarity. Fourth, choose a response that serves that outcome, even if it is silence.

Afterward, compare the note you wrote with what you eventually did. Which version would you rather have on the record? Rest does not erase the injury, but it gives your values a chance to lead the response.
