Warm limits

Setting a limit does not require becoming cold or distant. Start by naming the care: "I love our talks." Then set the edge: "and I need to end calls by nine on weeknights."

Warmth and clarity can live in the same sentence. Tone matters, so speak calmly and kindly rather than defensively.

Keep the door honest. Let the person know what remains possible, such as weekend calls or texts. Honoring a limit with warmth protects both the relationship and your wellbeing.

Draft a warm limit

A colleague often messages late at night. You want to keep the friendly relationship, yet the late messages are disrupting your evenings, and you worry that saying something will sound cold.

Write a two part message: first the care, then the limit. "I really enjoy working with you, and I have started turning off work messages after seven. I will reply first thing in the morning." Read it aloud and adjust until it sounds like you.

Send or say it, and notice the response. Warm limits are often received with understanding, and they protect the relationship from the slow buildup of resentment.

A simple rhythm to try

Here is the whole rhythm in three steps. First, name the care. Then set the edge. Finally, keep the door honest.
