Letting delays stay small
A late reply, a slow package, or a postponed meeting can quickly become a story: they are upset with me, the universe is blocking me, this will never happen. Notice how fast the mind builds a narrative.
Stick to what you know. "The reply has not come yet" is a fact. Everything beyond that is a guess. Facts alone usually feel much lighter than stories.
Choose a reasonable next step, such as a gentle follow up after a set time, and then return to your day. Most delays are simply delays.
Write the fact and the follow up
A friend has not replied to your message for two days. By the second evening, you have built a full story about them being upset with you, and you feel hurt about something that may not be true.
Next time a delay starts to grow into a story, write down only the fact: "I sent a message on Monday and have not heard back." Then set a reasonable follow up: "If I have not heard by Thursday, I will send a friendly check in."
Notice how much lighter the fact feels than the story. Most delays have ordinary explanations, and a calm follow up plan lets you return to your day.
