Revising the story
When something painful happens, the mind quickly writes a first version of the story, often harsher than the facts. Name that first version honestly: "They ignored me because they do not care."
Gather context. What else was happening? What do you actually know, and what are you guessing? Other perspectives and information often reveal a more complicated picture.
Revise with kindness toward everyone involved, including yourself. A more accurate story may still include hurt, and it is usually easier to live with and act wisely from.
Revise the story
Your friend did not invite you to a gathering, and you immediately decide they do not value you. The story hurts, and you begin to withdraw.
Write the first story your mind created. Then gather context: Did they invite only a few people? Have they included you in the past? Is there another explanation? Write a revised story with this information.
Notice how the revised story feels. More accurate stories can reduce hurt and help you respond with clarity.

A simple rhythm to try
Here is the whole rhythm in three steps. First, name the first version. Then gather context. Finally, revise with kindness.
