Agreeing on what is happening
Conflicts often grow when people are responding to different versions of events. Start by describing what is here, the observable facts, as neutrally as you can.
Check the meaning together. "When you arrived late, I felt unimportant. What was happening for you?" Asking about the other person's experience invites understanding rather than defense.
Choose the next truth to speak or act on. Once there is a shared picture, solutions become easier to find. Naming a shared reality is a quiet but powerful act of respect.
Try the facts first conversation
Two people might remember the same evening very differently. One recalls a pleasant dinner, the other recalls feeling ignored for most of it. Arguing about whose memory is correct rarely helps, because each person is describing a real experience.
Next time a disagreement arises, begin by agreeing on the observable facts. "We arrived at seven, you talked with your brother for most of dinner, and we left at ten." Then each person shares what those facts meant to them, without interruption.
Afterward, notice whether the conversation felt less adversarial. Starting from shared facts creates common ground, and understanding each other's meanings often leads to solutions neither person could see while arguing about what happened.

A simple rhythm to try
Here is the whole rhythm in three steps. First, describe what is here. Then check the meaning. Finally, choose the next truth.
