After the turn
Changing course, leaving a job, ending a relationship, moving cities, can be followed by a wave of second guessing. The old path suddenly looks better in memory, and every difficulty on the new path seems like proof of a mistake.
Self trust after changing course means remembering why you made the change, and giving the new direction enough time to show what it can offer.
If doubt about a past decision is weighing on you heavily, a good listener, whether a friend or a counselor, can help you think it through.

An example a few months in
Someone moves to a new city for a fresh start. Three months later, they feel lonely and wonder whether they made a terrible choice.
They reread the notes they wrote before the move, listing everything that felt stuck in their old life. The reasons still hold. They give themselves six more months, join a hiking group, and slowly the new city begins to feel like home.

Why changing course can shake confidence
After leaving a job, ending a relationship, moving, or abandoning a plan, it is natural to wonder whether you made the right decision. The old path may suddenly look better in memory than it was in reality.
Other people may question your choice too, adding their doubts to your own. It can start to feel as if changing course proves you cannot be trusted to choose well.
Yet changing course is often a sign of good judgment: noticing that something no longer fits and having the courage to respond.
Rebuilding confidence after a change
Revisit your reasons. Write down why you made the change, including what you knew and felt at the time. This record can steady you when doubt arrives.
Notice the benefits and lessons of the new path, even small ones, and let them count.
Give yourself time. New paths often feel awkward before they feel right. Confidence tends to return as you settle in and see yourself handling the new terrain.
A practice of the reasons letter
Write a short letter to your future self explaining why you changed course. Include what was not working, what you hoped for, and what you knew at the time.
Seal it or save it somewhere easy to find. When doubt arrives months later, as it often does, read the letter before making any new decision. It reminds you that the change came from a real place, and it helps you judge the new path fairly instead of through rosy memories of the old one.
Questions for your journal
- What new information made this course change honest rather than impulsive?
- Where do I confuse consistency with loyalty to an outdated plan?
- What small action would show trust in the person I am becoming?
Self trust after changing course grows through honest revision. Notice the pressure to stay the same, review what reality taught you, and choose an adjustment you can respect.
