Misty Peak Courage: face the misted climb, take one sure foothold, help the next climber
An original Infused Lights teaching diagram.

Imagine climbing a misty mountain path. You cannot see the top, and your boots are muddy. Someone on the trail behind you calls out, "How is it up there?" You could pretend you have it all figured out. Or you could say honestly, "It is steep, but I am finding my footing." That second answer takes courage, and it often helps both of you more.

Why we hide the middle

Many of us only want to be seen once we have arrived: the finished project, the healed wound, the polished skill. The messy middle feels embarrassing. We fear judgment, or worry that people will think less of us if they see us struggle or make mistakes.

Do not hide the way back so well that even you cannot find it.
“Do not hide the way back so well that even you cannot find it.”

What showing progress looks like

Being seen in progress can be simple. Sharing a draft with a trusted friend. Telling someone you are learning a new skill and are still a beginner. Admitting you are working on a habit and have not mastered it. Posting a work in progress instead of waiting for perfection. Each is a small act of honesty.

Choose safe witnesses

You do not have to share your progress with everyone. Start with people who are supportive and kind. A mentor, a close friend, a supportive group. Safe witnesses help you build confidence before sharing more widely.

Handling feedback

When you share unfinished work, you may receive feedback. Some will be helpful, some less so. Take what serves your growth and let the rest go. Remember that feedback on your work in progress is not a judgment of your worth.

Your honesty helps others

When you let people see your process, you give them permission to be imperfect too. Many people feel alone in their struggles because everyone else seems to have it together. Your honest middle can be a gift, like a climber calling back to say, "One sure foothold at a time."

Try this

  1. Choose one thing you are working on but have not finished.
  2. Pick one safe person to share it with.
  3. Share it honestly, including what is still hard.
  4. Receive feedback with curiosity, not self judgment.
  5. Notice how it feels to be seen before you are done.

Progress shared is still progress.
