Rest or escape?
Taking a break can bring genuine relief, restoring energy and perspective. But breaks can also become avoidance, postponing something that needs attention.
Ask yourself honestly: Will I return to this feeling more capable, or am I hoping it disappears? Relief leads back to engagement. Avoidance tends to increase dread.
Use breaks intentionally, with a plan to return. Taking care of yourself and facing challenges can work together when you know the difference.
Ask the return question
After a tough meeting, you take a walk. After a stressful phone call, you scroll social media for an hour. Both are breaks, but one may restore you while the other may simply delay what needs attention.
Each time you take a break this week, ask yourself: "Will I return to this feeling more able?" Set a clear end time for breaks, and notice whether you return as planned.
At the end of the week, reflect on which breaks brought real relief and which slid into avoidance. Knowing the difference helps you rest well while still facing what matters.
