Choosing a response
Reactions are fast and automatic: the sharp reply, the defensive shrug, the slammed laptop. Responses are chosen. The difference is often just a few seconds of space.
When you feel a surge of emotion, pause. Take a breath, notice what you feel in your body, and ask what outcome you actually want from this moment.
Then respond from that intention. Over time, practicing small pauses makes thoughtful responses more natural, and conversations tend to go better for everyone involved.
Practice the pause and choose
Your child spills juice on the couch right after you cleaned it. Before you know it, you have raised your voice, and you both feel bad afterward.
This week, when something triggers frustration, pause for one breath, notice what you feel, and ask yourself, "What response would help here?" Then choose your words and actions.
Notice how often the pause changes the outcome. Responding instead of reacting takes practice, and each time you do it, it becomes a little more natural.
