Asking for exactly what you need

Vague requests protect us from rejection, but they often leave needs unmet. "I wish people helped more" is safer than "Would you take out the trash on Tuesdays?" Name the actual need.

Ask without disguise. Hinting, sighing, or hoping someone guesses can create confusion and resentment. A clear, kind request respects both people.

Receive the response, whether yes, no, or a counteroffer. Being specific takes a little courage, and it usually leads to more help and fewer misunderstandings.

Make one specific ask

You want more help with household chores, but you say, "I wish people helped more." Nothing changes, and resentment grows.

Choose one specific task and ask directly: "Could you take out the trash on Tuesday and Friday nights?" Use a warm tone and clear words.

Notice the response. Specific requests are easier to fulfill and often lead to real change. If the answer is no, you still have clear information to work with.
