Boundaries as clear information

A boundary tells people how you can and cannot participate. "I do not take work calls after seven" is information about your limits, not a judgment of the person calling.

Share boundaries calmly and without accusation. When delivered as information, boundaries are easier for others to hear and respect, and less likely to start an argument.

Hold the boundary consistently. Others may test it at first, which is common. Calm repetition helps people adjust, and the relationship often becomes clearer and more relaxed over time.

Practice the information script

Setting a boundary can feel like accusing someone. "You always call too late" lands as criticism. "I am not available for calls after nine" lands as information. The boundary is the same, but the message is very different.

Choose one boundary you want to set or reinforce. Write it as a simple statement about your availability or limits, without blame: "I do not lend money," "I need Sunday mornings for rest," "I will not discuss my weight." Practice saying it calmly.

When you use it, notice the response. Boundaries offered as information are often easier for others to accept. If someone pushes, repeat the same sentence kindly rather than adding justifications.
