The gift of boredom
Boredom can feel uncomfortable, so many of us reach for a phone at the first sign of it. Yet boredom often precedes creativity, reflection, and new ideas.
Try allowing boredom for a few minutes without filling it. Sit with a cup of tea, walk without headphones, or wait in line without scrolling.
Notice what arises: daydreams, memories, solutions to problems, or simply calm. Letting yourself be bored long enough can open space your mind has been missing.
Try ten minutes of nothing
Waiting for an appointment, standing in line, riding the bus: these moments used to be filled with daydreams. Now most of us fill them instantly with a phone, and the mind rarely gets a chance to wander.
Once a day this week, spend ten minutes without input. Sit on a bench, look out a window, or walk without headphones. When boredom arrives, let it stay. Notice the urge to reach for something, and gently let it pass.
Pay attention to what surfaces. Ideas, memories, solutions to problems, or simply calm may appear. Many people find that boredom, given enough time, opens into creativity and rest.
