Giving attention a place to rest
Scattered attention can leave you feeling busy but unfulfilled. Notice the scattering without criticism: the jumping between tabs, the half started tasks, the restless checking.
Choose a worthy focus, something meaningful and manageable for the next stretch of time. It might be a single project, a conversation, a book, or a simple chore done fully.
Return without punishment when attention wanders, as it will. Gently come back, again and again. Each return is practice, and attention gradually learns where its home is.
Try a single focus hour
Many workdays look like this: an email half answered, a document half edited, a message checked, a tab opened, another tab opened. By evening, much has been touched and little has been finished, and attention feels frayed.
Choose one hour this week for a single focus. Pick one meaningful task, close other tabs, put your phone in another room, and work only on that. When your mind wanders, gently bring it back without criticism. Stop when the hour ends.
Afterward, notice how you feel. Was the hour harder or easier than expected? How much did you accomplish? Many people discover that one focused hour does more than an entire scattered afternoon, and that attention enjoys having a home.

A simple rhythm to try
Here is the whole rhythm in three steps. First, notice the scattering. Then choose a worthy focus. Finally, return without punishment.
