Living calmly with the unknown

Uncertainty is part of every life. Trying to eliminate it completely, by researching endlessly or seeking constant reassurance, can increase anxiety rather than reduce it.

Separate what you can know from what you cannot. Gather the information that is available, make a reasonable plan, and set a time to revisit it.

Then let the rest stay open. Holding uncertainty reasonably means acting on your best understanding while staying flexible enough to adjust when new information arrives.

Split known from unknown

Facing a possible layoff at work, you spend evenings imagining every possible outcome. The uncertainty feels unbearable, and you cannot focus on anything else.

Take a sheet of paper and draw two columns: what I know and what I do not know. Fill in both honestly. Then, under the known column, write one practical step you can take this week, such as updating your resume or reviewing your budget.

Notice how separating the two changes your sense of control. Uncertainty remains, but having a clear picture and a concrete action can make it far more manageable.
