Holding opposite feelings at once
You can feel relieved and sad when a chapter ends, grateful and resentful toward a family member, excited and afraid about a new opportunity. Contradictory feelings are part of being human.
Instead of forcing yourself to pick one, make room for both. Try saying, "Part of me feels this, and part of me feels that." Naming both often reduces inner tension.
Contradictory feelings usually soften with time and understanding. Allowing them, rather than fighting them, can bring a surprising sense of peace and self acceptance.
Try a both and journal
When a long job ends, you might feel relief and grief at once. When a child leaves home, you might feel proud and lonely. The mind may insist that only one feeling is legitimate, creating inner conflict.
Next time you notice mixed feelings, write a sentence beginning with "Part of me feels..." and another beginning with "And another part of me feels..." Write both fully, without trying to resolve them.
Read the two sentences together. Notice whether naming both reduces tension. Contradictory feelings are a normal part of meaningful experiences, and giving each one room can bring surprising peace.
