Staying with what is happening

When something unexpected happens, the mind rushes to explain it: a sign, a punishment, a lesson. Try noticing before naming. What actually happened? What do you see, hear, and feel right now?

Stay with the data a little longer. Many events have more than one meaning, and some have none beyond what they are. Patience with uncertainty can prevent stories that add unnecessary fear or pressure.

Let meaning arrive in its own time. Often, understanding comes days or weeks later, through reflection and conversation. Presence first, meaning later, tends to bring clearer insight.

Try a wait before meaning practice

Suppose a friend cancels plans at the last minute. Within seconds, your mind may offer a story: they are pulling away, I did something wrong, this always happens. The story arrives so fast that it feels like a fact.

Next time something unexpected happens, try writing two lines. First, what actually happened, in plain words. Second, the meaning your mind is offering. Then add a third line: "I will wait a day before deciding what this means."

The next day, read your notes. Has new information arrived? Does the meaning still feel true? Often the situation looks quite different with a little time, and presence before interpretation spares you unnecessary worry.

Your presence is already changing the field around you.
“Your presence is already changing the field around you.”
