One true sentence at a time

Hard conversations can feel overwhelming when you try to plan everything you will say. Instead, focus on the next honest sentence.

"I am feeling nervous about this conversation" or "I want to understand what happened" are simple truths that can open a door.

Speak one honest sentence, then listen. Conversations unfold step by step, and honesty offered in small pieces is often easier to share and to hear.

Prepare your first sentence

You need to tell your manager you are overwhelmed. You imagine the whole conversation and feel paralyzed because you do not know how to say everything perfectly.

Instead of scripting the whole conversation, write only the first honest sentence: "I want to talk about my workload because I am struggling to keep up." Practice saying it aloud. Trust that the next sentence will come after you listen.

Use the sentence and notice what unfolds. Starting with one honest line often makes difficult conversations feel more manageable, and honesty offered in small pieces is easier to share and receive.

Some sentences only become true in color.
