Many people talk about the fear of failure. Fewer talk about the fear of success, which is quieter but can hold you back just as firmly. You may not even know you have it. Learning to recognize its signs is the first step toward letting yourself grow.

What is fear of success?
Fear of failure often shows up as inertia, the feeling that you cannot decide or act because you might be rejected or disappointed. Fear of success is subtler. Deep down, we may worry about what success would ask of us, such as more responsibility, more visibility, changes in our relationships or the pressure to keep it going. Without noticing, we pull back just as things begin to work.
Signs you may have it

- You study self improvement tools, yet your life does not seem to change.
- You settle for less than you know you are capable of.
- You start projects with enthusiasm but lose steam or stop before the finish.
- You expect things to go wrong, even when they are going well.

If you recognize yourself in these, be gentle. This is very human, and it can be changed.
Common ways it shows up
Procrastination
Putting off the actions you know would move you forward is one of the most common signs. Nearly everyone does it from time to time. The way through is to make the first step so small that it feels easy. Ten minutes counts. Refine as you go, but start.

Getting lost in the plan
Planning is wise, yet it can become a hiding place. If you notice that you are polishing your plan and not acting on it, remember that the plan is a map, not the destination. Stay flexible, adjust when new information appears, and trust that doors can open from unexpected places.
Waiting for perfect timing

There is rarely a perfect moment or a perfect amount of information. Small steps forward teach you far more than waiting. Even if a step leads you off course, you gain knowledge about what does not work, which is real progress.
Perfectionism
Every piece of work can be improved, and perfection can become a way to avoid finishing. Many artists admit that they can always find something to fix in their own work, and yet we still love it. Aim for "good and shared" over "perfect and hidden."
Seeing only problems
If your mind naturally scans for what could go wrong, you can put that skill to good use.
- List the problems clearly.
- Decide which are real now and which are only possible.
- Make a plan for the real ones, and a simple backup plan for the possible ones.
- Celebrate each problem you solve. Let it remind you how far you have come.
Asking better questions helps. Instead of "Why is this so hard?" try "What is one way I can handle this?"
Moving through it
- Name the fear. Saying "I think I am afraid of what happens if this works" often takes away some of its power.
- Define success on your own terms. See Ten Tips to Set Your Mind for Success for ideas.
- Take one small action each day.
- Celebrate progress, not just results.
- Surround yourself with people who cheer you on, and speak to a coach or counselor if the fear feels heavy.
