Throughout human history, people have felt kinship with animals and looked to them as teachers, protectors and messengers. Many Indigenous cultures have deep, specific traditions about animal relatives, clans and helpers that belong to those communities. In the broader spiritual world, people speak of an animal guide, power animal or totem: an animal whose qualities you are drawn to, that keeps appearing in your life, or that comes to you in dreams and meditation to teach you something. You do not choose your animal guide so much as notice which animal keeps choosing you.

Each animal carries a medicine, a quality of wisdom. When one keeps showing up, it is often bringing you the medicine you need.

A note on respect

The word "totem" comes from the Ojibwe language, and "spirit animal" is used by some Native communities in sacred ways. Many Indigenous people ask that others use general terms such as animal guide, animal ally or power animal instead, and that sacred ceremonies are not copied. We honor that here. You can build a deep, respectful relationship with animal wisdom without claiming traditions that are not yours.

Signs an animal is calling you

  • It keeps appearing in real life, art, books or conversation
  • It shows up in dreams, especially repeatedly
  • You have always felt drawn to it since childhood
  • You had an unusual encounter, such as an animal approaching you or staring
  • You feel strong emotion when you see it
  • You fear it. Sometimes our guides come through what we fear

Common animal guides and their medicine

  • Wolf: loyalty, instinct, family, teaching
  • Owl: wisdom, intuition, seeing what is hidden
  • Bear: strength, healing, the wisdom of rest
  • Deer: gentleness, sensitivity, grace
  • Eagle or hawk: vision, perspective, messages
  • Hummingbird: joy, sweetness, lightness
  • Butterfly: transformation and new life
  • Fox: cleverness, adaptability, discretion
  • Snake: renewal, shedding the old, life force
  • Turtle: patience, protection, steady progress
  • Horse: freedom, power, movement
  • Dolphin: play, harmony, breath

Your own feelings and experiences with the animal matter more than any list.

A meditation to meet your animal guide

  1. Sit quietly and breathe slowly into your belly.
  2. Picture yourself walking into a natural place: a forest, beach, desert or meadow.
  3. Find an opening: a cave, a tree hollow or a path.
  4. Ask, "Will my animal guide please come to me?"
  5. Wait. Notice what animal appears, how it moves, and how you feel.
  6. Ask, "What do you want to teach me?" Listen.
  7. Thank it and walk back the way you came. Wiggle your fingers and toes.

If an animal shows up three or more times, especially gently, it may be your guide.

Honoring your animal guide

  • Learn about the real animal and its habitat
  • Support conservation for that species
  • Spend time in nature where it lives
  • Keep a photo or carving on your altar
  • Call on its qualities when you need them
