Letting words land
After speaking, many people rush to fill silence with more explanation. Leaving space allows the other person to absorb what you said and respond thoughtfully.
Practice pausing after sharing something important. Count a few breaths before adding more. The silence may feel long, and it often invites deeper conversation.
Space after speaking shows respect and confidence. It tells others that you trust your words and are genuinely interested in their response.
Practice the count of five
You share something vulnerable, and in the brief silence that follows, you rush to soften it: "But it is not a big deal," or "Anyway, never mind." The other person never gets the chance to respond to what you actually said.
This week, after you say something important, silently count to five before adding anything. Let the other person take in your words and respond in their own time.
Notice what happens in that space. Often the response is warmer or more thoughtful than you expected. Leaving room after speaking shows confidence and respect, and it lets your words land.
