Making it easier for others to help

Some people find it hard to accept help, deflecting offers or waiting until they are overwhelmed. Becoming easier to help is a skill that strengthens relationships.

Be specific about what you need, accept offers graciously, and express appreciation. Avoid testing whether people will guess what you need.

When you allow others to help, you also give them the joy of contributing. Relationships become more balanced and mutual when help flows in both directions.

Practice accepting one offer

A friend offers to bring dinner while you are recovering from a busy season, and you hear yourself say, "Oh, no, I am fine, thank you." The offer was sincere, but your habit of declining kept the help away.

This week, accept at least one offer of help without deflecting. Say "Thank you, that would be wonderful." If no offers come, make one small, specific request of someone you trust.

Notice how it feels to receive, and how the other person responds. Many people discover that letting others help strengthens relationships, because care flows best when it can move in both directions.
