Offering help respectfully
Wanting to help is caring, but unsolicited help can feel intrusive or disempowering. Asking permission respects the other person's autonomy.
Try asking, "Would you like some help with that?" or "Would you like my input?" Accept the answer graciously, even if it is no.
Help offered with permission is more likely to be welcomed and effective. It builds trust and shows respect for others' choices.
Practice the permission question
You see a friend struggling to set up a new phone and you take it from their hands to do it yourself. You meant to help, but they feel embarrassed and a little powerless. Help without permission can sometimes feel like a takeover.
This week, before offering help, advice, or input, ask first: "Would you like a hand with that?" or "Do you want my thoughts, or would you rather figure it out?" Accept whatever answer you receive without pushing.
Notice how people respond to being asked. Help offered with permission tends to be more welcome and more effective, and it respects the other person's ability to choose.
