A singing bowl is one of the friendliest ways to bring sound into your practice. You do not need musical training. You only need a little patience, a relaxed hand and a few quiet minutes.
Tibetan bowls and crystal bowls
Hand hammered metal bowls, often called Tibetan bowls, have a warm and layered tone with many overtones. Crystal bowls are made from quartz and tend to ring with a clear, pure note that carries across a room. Both are lovely. Choose the one whose sound makes you want to keep listening.
Two ways to play
Striking. Hold the bowl on your flat palm or set it on its cushion. Tap the outer rim gently with the padded end of the mallet. Let the tone ring until it fades completely before you strike again.
Singing the rim. Hold the mallet like a pen, close to the bottom. Press it lightly against the outer rim and circle slowly and steadily, keeping your arm relaxed. After a few rounds the bowl begins to hum and the sound builds. If it rattles, slow down and ease the pressure.
Common beginner mistakes
- Gripping the bowl with your fingers, which mutes the tone. Rest it on an open palm instead.
- Circling too fast. Slow and even almost always sings better.
- Pressing too hard. Let the weight of your hand do the work.
A three minute practice
Sit comfortably and take three slow breaths. Strike the bowl once and follow the sound with your attention until you can no longer hear it. Notice the silence that follows. Strike again and repeat three times, letting your exhale lengthen each round. Close by resting your hands in your lap for a moment before you move on with your day.

Questions people ask
Do I need experience to play a singing bowl?
No. Striking the rim gently works on the first try, and singing the rim usually comes after a few slow practice rounds.
Why does my singing bowl rattle?
The mallet is usually moving too fast or pressing too hard. Slow down and lighten your touch.
Crystal or Tibetan singing bowl for a beginner?
Either works. Crystal bowls give a clear single note and Tibetan bowls give a warm layered tone, so choose the sound you enjoy most.
