Honesty when praise feels good
Flattering stories, about our talents, our intentions, or our role in a success, are easy to believe. They feel good, and that makes them harder to question.
Check flattering stories against evidence, just as you would check unflattering ones. Did others contribute? Were there lucky factors? What could have gone better?
Honest self assessment builds real confidence that does not depend on illusions. You can enjoy praise and still keep a clear, grounded view of yourself.
Try a balanced credit list
After a successful project, it is easy to remember your own contributions vividly and others' faintly. The story becomes "I made this happen," which feels good but leaves out the colleague who solved a key problem or the lucky timing that helped.
Think of a recent success. Write down everything that contributed to it: your efforts, other people's help, favorable circumstances, and luck. Then thank at least one person whose role might be overlooked.
Notice how the fuller story feels. Honest credit tends to strengthen relationships and keep confidence grounded in reality, which makes it more resilient when things do not go well.
