Keeping a Promise Flexible Enough to Keep

Rigid promises can break under real life pressures. When making a commitment, think about what might get in the way and build in some flexibility, such as a range of dates or a smaller fallback version.

Communicate early if circumstances change. Letting someone know before a deadline, rather than after, keeps trust intact and allows for adjustments together.

Flexibility does not mean flakiness. The core commitment remains. You are simply making it sturdy enough to survive ordinary life, which makes it more likely to be kept.

Rewrite one promise with flex

Imagine promising to call a parent every evening. It is a loving commitment, yet on busy nights it becomes a source of stress, and missed calls lead to guilt on one side and worry on the other.

Choose one ongoing promise and rewrite it with built in flexibility. "I will call at least three evenings a week, and text on the others" or "I will finish the report by Friday, with Monday as a fallback if the data is late." Share the updated version if others are involved.

Notice whether the flexible version is easier to keep. Many people find that a realistic promise kept consistently builds more trust and less guilt than an ideal promise that keeps breaking.
