The Courage to Ask a Better Question

Asking questions that open doors

The questions we ask shape the answers we find. "Why does this always happen to me?" leads to different places than "What can I learn from this?" or "What would help right now?"

Notice the questions you habitually ask yourself and others. Are they curious and open, or loaded and limiting? Small shifts in wording can change the direction of a conversation or decision.

Asking better questions can take courage, especially when the honest question is uncomfortable. Yet clear, kind questions often lead to clearer, kinder lives.

Upgrade one question this week

When something goes wrong, the default question is often "Why does this keep happening to me?" It feels natural, but it tends to lead to frustration rather than insight. A different question can open different doors.

Choose one recurring challenge and write down the question you usually ask about it. Then write three alternatives, such as "What is within my control here?", "What would I tell a friend in this situation?", or "What is one small experiment I could try?"

Live with the new questions for a week. Notice whether they lead to different thoughts, conversations, or actions. Often the most useful shift is not finding a new answer, but asking a better question in the first place.
