Open to other answers

When asking a question, we often have an answer in mind. Being open to different answers allows for learning and connection.

Practice listening without trying to steer the response. Notice if you feel resistant to unexpected answers, and stay curious about them.

Making room for different answers enriches understanding and relationships. It shows respect for others' perspectives and can reveal possibilities you had not considered.

Ask an open question

You ask your teenager, "You had a good day, right?" The question already contains the answer you hoped for, and they simply say yes. You miss the chance to hear what really happened.

This week, practice asking open questions without leading toward a particular answer: "How was your day?" "What do you think about this plan?" "What would you do differently?" Then listen without steering.

Notice the answers you receive. Some may surprise you or challenge your views. Making room for different answers deepens understanding and shows respect for others' perspectives.
