Moving forward with mixed feelings

Ambivalence means holding two true feelings at once: wanting a change and fearing it, loving someone and needing space. Name both truths honestly. Mixed feelings are normal, especially for meaningful decisions.

Next, decide what is knowable. Gather the information you can, and accept that some uncertainty will remain no matter how long you wait. Waiting for perfect clarity can become a way of staying stuck.

Take a partial step that respects both feelings: a trial period, a conversation, a small experiment. Partial steps let you learn more while keeping options open, which often helps ambivalence resolve naturally.

Try a two column honesty page

Imagine being offered a new job with better pay but a longer commute and less flexibility. Part of you is excited, part of you is reluctant, and every time you think about it, you swing between the two without getting closer to a decision.

Take a page and draw two columns. In one, write everything that draws you toward the change. In the other, write everything that holds you back. Do not argue with either side. Then circle the one or two items in each column that feel most important.

Look at what you circled and ask: what small step could honor both? Perhaps asking for a trial period, negotiating one remote day, or talking with someone already in the role. Ambivalence often softens once each side feels heard and a next step is clear.

Stay long enough for the two halves to recognize each other.
“Stay long enough for the two halves to recognize each other.”

A simple rhythm to try

Here is the whole rhythm in three steps. First, name both truths. Then decide what is knowable. Finally, take a partial step.
