Turning gently toward what you avoid
Avoidance often hides in busyness. Unopened mail, a postponed conversation, or a project you keep reorganizing instead of starting. Name the avoided thing plainly, without judgment.
Then ask what fear sits underneath. Is it fear of conflict, failure, bad news, or feeling overwhelmed? Meeting the real fear with compassion often makes it smaller than the dread suggested.
Choose one point of contact: open one envelope, write one sentence, or schedule the call. Small contact breaks the spell of avoidance and usually brings more relief than the avoiding ever did.
A ten minute avoidance check
Many people have one item that hovers for weeks: an unopened letter from the bank, an email from a relative, a form that needs filling out, a doctor's appointment to schedule. It takes up more mental space than the task itself ever would.
Set a timer for ten minutes and write down everything you have been putting off, big or small. Choose the one that feels lightest and take a single step on it right now: open the envelope, write the first line of the reply, or look up the phone number.
Afterward, notice how your body feels. Relief often arrives faster than expected. Avoidance tends to grow in the dark, and even brief contact can shrink it to its real size, making the next step easier to take.

A simple rhythm to try
Here is the whole rhythm in three steps. First, name the avoided thing. Then meet the real fear. Finally, choose one point of contact.
