The morning flush is a simple traditional ritual: on an empty stomach, right after waking, you take a small amount of good olive oil mixed with fresh key lime juice, a pinch of cayenne pepper and a pinch of unrefined salt. Folk cleansing traditions use it to "wake up" digestion, encourage the flow of bile and get things moving before the day begins. Many people describe feeling lighter, warmer and more alert afterward. It is fast, cheap and made from ingredients already in your kitchen.
It belongs to a family of traditional cleanses, including the lemon and olive oil "liver drink" of folk herbalism and the famous Master Cleanse lemonade with cayenne. Here is how it works, how to make it, and how to do it gently.

Where this tradition comes from
- Olive oil and lemon has been used in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern folk traditions for generations, taken in the morning as a "liver drink."
- The Master Cleanse, created by Stanley Burroughs in the 1940s, combines lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne and water, and also uses a morning salt-water flush.
- Salt water flushes appear in many yogic and folk traditions as ways to clear the digestive tract.
The version here is gentler than long cleanses: a small morning ritual rather than days without food.
Why each ingredient is used
Extra virgin olive oil
Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats and plant compounds called polyphenols. Fat in the stomach naturally signals the gallbladder to release bile, which helps digest fats and carries waste out of the body. Traditional cleansers use olive oil in the morning for this reason. Choose cold-pressed extra virgin oil that tastes fresh and peppery.
Key lime
Key limes are small, fragrant and very tart. Sour flavors are traditionally used to wake up digestion, and citrus brings vitamin C and bright flavor. Regular lemon or lime works if key limes are hard to find.
Cayenne
Cayenne's heat comes from capsaicin. Many people feel it as a warming rush that gets circulation moving. Folk healers have long used cayenne as a stimulating, warming herb.
A pinch of unrefined salt
A small pinch adds minerals and electrolytes and helps the mixture taste balanced. Read more in Why Your Body Needs Salt.
The recipe
You will need:
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
- Juice of 1 key lime (or half a regular lime or lemon)
- A small pinch of cayenne (start with the tiniest amount)
- A small pinch of unrefined salt
How:
- On waking, drink a glass of room-temperature water first.
- Mix the olive oil, lime juice, cayenne and salt in a small glass. Stir well.
- Drink it slowly or in one go, then follow with a little warm water.
- Wait about 20 to 30 minutes before breakfast.
- Start with a few mornings a week and notice how you feel.
Some people prefer to blend it into a little warm water like a tea. Others use just olive oil and lime. Adjust to what feels kind.
How it may feel
Many people notice warmth in the belly, a gentle urge to visit the bathroom later in the morning, and a lighter feeling. Some feel nothing much, and that is fine too. If you feel nausea, burning, cramping or discomfort, stop.
Gentle cautions
- Skip it if you have reflux, ulcers or a sensitive stomach, as cayenne and citrus can irritate.
- If you have gallbladder issues or gallstones, talk with a practitioner first, because fat stimulates the gallbladder.
- Cayenne can interact with some medications. Ask if you are unsure.
- This is a small daily ritual, not a substitute for food, water or care.

Making it a ritual
Before you drink, hold the glass in both hands and set an intention: "I welcome a clear, bright day. I release what I no longer need." Drink it facing the morning light if you can. A cleanse becomes more than chemistry when you bring your whole heart to it.
