When you wake up, your body has usually gone seven or eight hours without a sip of water. All night long you have been losing water through your breath and skin. So the first thing many people reach for, coffee, actually adds to the gap. A simple glass of water on waking helps refill what was lost, gently wakes up your digestion, and gives your brain and body the fluid they need to start the day clear. Many spiritual traditions treat that first glass as sacred, a way of greeting the day before anything else.

It is perhaps the simplest health ritual there is, and one of the most often skipped.

What happens overnight

  • You lose water as you breathe. Every exhale carries moisture.
  • You lose water through your skin, especially in warm rooms or under heavy covers.
  • Your kidneys keep working, which is why many people wake needing the bathroom.
  • You do not drink. Unless you wake up thirsty, it is the longest stretch without water in your day.

Why the first glass matters

Research shows that even mild dehydration, losing around 1 to 2% of body weight in water, can affect mood, focus and energy in some people. Here is what a morning glass may help with:

  • Energy and focus. Many people notice that some morning grogginess eases after water.
  • Digestion. Water, especially warm water, gently wakes the digestive tract and helps things move.
  • Kidneys. Water helps them flush out the waste products they have been filtering all night.
  • Mood. Thirst can feel like irritability or low mood before it feels like thirst.
  • Fewer headaches for people whose headaches are linked to low fluids.

Why coffee first can backfire

Coffee is not the enemy, but drinking it before water means your first input of the day is a stimulant on an empty, dry system. Many people find they feel steadier when they drink water first and wait a little before coffee.

The Ayurvedic dawn water ritual

In Ayurveda, drinking water on waking is called ushapan, "dawn drinking." Traditionally, water is left overnight in a copper vessel and sipped warm or at room temperature on waking, before brushing the teeth or eating. It is said to wake agni, the digestive fire, and help the body eliminate.

A simple morning water routine

  1. Set it up the night before. Leave a glass or bottle of water by your bed or in the kitchen.
  2. Drink one to two glasses on waking, at room temperature or warm. Sip, do not gulp.
  3. Optional additions: a squeeze of lemon or lime for brightness, a small pinch of unrefined salt for minerals (why salt matters), or a slice of fresh ginger for warmth.
  4. Hold the glass and set an intention. "Today I choose clarity." Or "Thank you for this new day."
  5. Wait 15 to 30 minutes before coffee or breakfast if you can.
  6. Keep sipping through the morning.

How much is enough?

Needs vary with body size, activity, climate and health. The US National Academies give general daily total water intake estimates of about 3.7 liters for men and 2.7 liters for women, including water from food and all drinks. Pale yellow urine is a simple everyday sign that you are well hydrated. If you have heart, kidney or other conditions that affect fluids, follow your practitioner's guidance.

Water as prayer

Before you drink, look at the water for a moment. Remember it has traveled through clouds, rivers and oceans to reach you. Then drink it like a blessing. Read the full ritual in Water as First Prayer.
