Psychometry is the art of sensing impressions, feelings, images or information by holding an object. The idea is that objects absorb some of the energy of the people who owned, wore or loved them, and that a sensitive person can tune into that energy, a little like listening to a song recorded in the object. A wedding ring, a watch, a set of keys or an old photograph are classic objects to read. It is also called clairtangency, "clear touching," and many people discover they have some ability with practice.

Everyone has felt a hint of it: picking up a grandparent's sweater and suddenly feeling their presence, or walking into an antique shop and feeling one piece "call" to you.

A brief history

The word psychometry, meaning "soul measuring," was coined in 1842 by American physician Joseph Rodes Buchanan, who believed objects carried a record of their history. Geologist William Denton experimented with his wife and sister reading rocks and fossils in the 1860s. In the twentieth century, psychometry became a standard practice in psychic development circles, and some psychics have claimed to assist investigations with it, though such claims are controversial.

How it is thought to work

Spiritual explanations include:

  • Energy imprint: strong emotions and long contact leave an energetic imprint on objects.
  • The Akashic connection: the object acts as a doorway to the energetic record of its owner.
  • Intuitive focus: holding an object gives your intuition a focal point, quieting the thinking mind.

Science has not confirmed psychometry, so we approach it as a spiritual practice and a way to develop sensitivity, not as proof.

What you might receive

  • Feelings: happiness, sadness, love, tension
  • Images: places, faces, colors, scenes
  • Words or names
  • Body sensations: warmth, coolness, tingling
  • A sense of personality or age

A simple beginner exercise

  1. Ask a friend for a small object that belongs to them or someone they know well, something you know nothing about. Metal objects like rings, keys or watches are traditionally easiest.
  2. Ground and center. Sit quietly, breathe into your feet and set an intention: "I receive only what is helpful and kind."
  3. Hold the object in your non-dominant hand (often the left), or between both palms.
  4. Close your eyes and wait. Do not try hard. Notice the first feelings, images, colors or words.
  5. Speak everything aloud without judging it. "I feel warmth... I see a blue door... the word 'Florida'... someone laughing."
  6. Ask a few questions inside: "Who owned you? How did they feel? Where have you been?"
  7. Check with your friend. Celebrate anything that fits. Do not worry about what does not.
  8. Clear the object by holding it under running water or passing it through incense smoke, and clear yourself by shaking your hands.

Tips for growing the skill

  • Practice often with objects from different people
  • Try photos in sealed envelopes
  • Keep a log of your impressions and results
  • Notice which clair speaks most clearly through objects: feeling, seeing, hearing or knowing. See The 4 Clairs
  • Rest if you feel drained

Ethics and care

  • Only read objects with permission.
  • Share impressions gently. Never frighten people or claim certainty about sensitive things.
  • Be careful with objects linked to grief or trauma. They can carry heavy energy.
  • Clear secondhand items before bringing them into your home. See House Energy Clearing Rituals.
