Many children are naturally intuitive. They have not yet learned to doubt what they feel, and their imaginations are wide open. A child may describe an "imaginary friend," say something they could not know, talk about a grandparent they never met, or sense when someone is sad before anyone speaks. Whether you see these as psychic gifts, deep sensitivity or rich imagination, the most helpful response is the same: listen calmly, do not frighten or dismiss them, and help them stay grounded and safe. A child who feels heard grows into an adult who trusts their inner voice.

You do not need to know exactly what is happening. You only need to be a safe place for your child to tell you.

Gentle signs of an intuitive child

These are common in sensitive children. Any single sign is normal childhood behavior.

  • Imaginary friends who seem detailed and consistent
  • Knowing things: who is calling, what is in a present, that someone is coming
  • Talking about passed loved ones, including ones they never met
  • Very vivid dreams, sometimes dreams that come true
  • Feeling others' emotions strongly and getting upset in tense rooms
  • Seeing lights, colors or "people"
  • Strong connection with animals and nature
  • Speaking of "before": memories of another life or "when I was big"
  • Deep wisdom or questions about God, death and the universe
  • Sensitivity to crowds, noise, fabrics and violence on screens

Sensitive, imaginative or psychic?

All three often overlap. Imagination is healthy. Sensitivity is a temperament. Intuition is a gift. You do not need to sort them precisely. Respond to all of them with curiosity and steadiness.

How to support an intuitive child

  1. Listen without leading. Ask open questions: "What did they look like? How did you feel?" Avoid suggesting answers.
  2. Stay calm. Children read our reactions. Your calm tells them they are safe.
  3. Do not dismiss or mock. "That is just your imagination" can teach a child to shut down.
  4. Do not over-encourage either. Making a big show of every experience can create pressure. Treat it as normal.
  5. Teach a simple protection. "Imagine a bubble of light around you. Only love can come in."
  6. Teach "no." If anything ever feels scary, they can say, "Go away, I only want love," and come to you.
  7. Ground them daily: outdoor play, bare feet, warm meals, cuddles, regular sleep.
  8. Protect their senses: less screen violence, quiet corners, gentle music.
  9. Give them a journal or drawing book for dreams and visions.
  10. Honor their questions about life and death with simple, honest answers.

When to look for extra support

A gentle note: If a child seems frightened, is not sleeping, talks about harm, withdraws, or has big changes in behavior, please reach out to a trusted pediatric practitioner or counselor. Supporting a child's wellbeing and honoring their spirituality go hand in hand.

In The Starseed Chronicles

Our Starseed Chronicles friend Petmo reminds young readers that animals and children often sense the same quiet things. Sharing a character story can help a child talk about what they feel. Meet them here, or explore The Starseed Chronicles.

The gift of a heard child

Many intuitive adults say that their gifts went quiet because no one believed them. You can change that story for your child. Read more in Are You an Indigo Adult? and Inner Child Kindness.
