Indigo adults are people who are said to carry a strong indigo color in their aura, the color of the third eye. The idea first appeared in the 1970s and 1980s, when some intuitives began describing a new generation of children who seemed more sensitive, more intuitive and less willing to accept rules that made no sense. Many of those children are now adults. Indigos are often described as truth seekers, natural rebels against injustice, deeply sensitive and visionary, with a sense that they came to help change outdated systems. If you have always questioned everything, felt things deeply and longed for a fairer, more loving world, you may recognize yourself here.
The indigo idea is spiritual, not scientific, and it overlaps with what many people call starseeds, empaths and highly sensitive people. Use it as a mirror, not a label.

Where the idea comes from
The term "indigo children" is usually traced to Nancy Ann Tappe, who described seeing indigo in children's auras, and was popularized by the 1999 book The Indigo Children by Lee Carroll and Jan Tober. Later authors, including Kabir and Ana Jaffe in Indigo Adults, wrote about indigo souls who grew up before anyone had a word for them.
Common indigo traits
- A strong sense of truth. You can feel when something is false.
- You question authority. Not to be difficult, but because "because I said so" was never enough.
- Deep sensitivity. To emotions, energy, injustice, noise and harshness.
- Big-picture thinking. You see how things connect and how they could be better.
- A sense of purpose. You feel you came to do something meaningful.
- Low tolerance for injustice. Cruelty and unfairness affect you physically.
- Strong intuition. You often know things before they happen.
- Creativity. You prefer to find your own way.
- A need for freedom. Rigid systems feel suffocating.
- You felt different growing up, often labeled stubborn, dreamy or "too much."
The gifts of indigos
- Pathfinders: indigos often go first, breaking old patterns so others can follow.
- Truth-tellers: they name what others feel but do not say.
- Healers and advocates: many become teachers, counselors, artists, activists and innovators.
- Visionaries: they hold a picture of a kinder world and work toward it.
The struggles
- Frustration and anger at broken systems
- Feeling isolated or misunderstood
- Burnout from fighting too many battles
- Difficulty with jobs that feel meaningless
- Overwhelm from sensitivity
The teaching many indigo authors share: the warrior energy of youth must mature into wisdom. You do not have to fight every system. You can build the new instead.
Indigos in love
Indigos tend to want deep, honest, soul-level relationships, not surface romance. They need partners who respect their freedom and share their values. Their challenge is often softening their intensity and allowing themselves to be cared for.
Indigos and the upper chakras
Indigo souls are said to be very active in the upper chakras, especially the third eye and crown. This brings vision and intuition, and it can also leave them ungrounded. That is why grounding the lower chakras, body, safety, emotion and practical action, is so important for indigos. See The Seven Chakras and the Nervous System.
Self-care for indigo adults
- Ground daily. Walk, garden, cook, move.
- Choose your battles. Channel your fire into one cause at a time.
- Protect your sensitivity. Quiet time, nature and boundaries.
- Find your people. Other indigos and sensitive souls will understand you.
- Create. Indigos are builders of the new. Make something.
