The seven chakras sit along the spine, and many teachers have noticed that each one lines up closely with a major bundle of nerves, called a plexus, or with an important gland. The root sits near the base of the spine and the nerves that serve the legs and pelvis. The heart sits at the cardiac plexus. The throat sits near the nerves of the neck and voice. The crown sits over the brain itself. In other words, the ancient energy map and the modern nervous system map seem to tell a similar story: life force travels along the spine, and where it gathers, both mystics and anatomists find a center of activity.

This is a beautiful bridge. It gives you a physical place to feel each chakra, and a reason why calming the nervous system so often feels like balancing your energy.

A gentle word on how to read this map

Chakras come from yoga and tantra traditions over a thousand years old. Nerve plexuses come from anatomy. The correspondences below are a way of connecting the two that many yoga teachers and energy workers use. They are a map for reflection and practice, not a medical model. Your body is wiser than any chart.

The chakra and nervous system map

1. Root chakra (Muladhara): coccygeal and sacral nerves

At the base of the spine, the coccygeal plexus and lower sacral nerves serve the pelvic floor, legs and feet. This is where we feel safety and survival. The adrenal glands, which help the body respond to stress, are often linked to the root. When you feel unsafe, many people notice tension in the legs, hips and pelvic floor.

2. Sacral chakra (Svadhisthana): sacral and lumbar plexus

Just below the navel, the sacral and lumbar plexus serve the lower abdomen, hips and reproductive organs. Emotion, pleasure and creativity live here. The reproductive glands are associated with this center.

3. Solar plexus (Manipura): the celiac plexus

Here the anatomy even uses the same name. The celiac plexus, often called the solar plexus, is a dense network of nerves behind the stomach that helps regulate digestion. It is where "butterflies" and "gut feelings" live. The pancreas and digestion are linked with this chakra of personal power and will.

4. Heart chakra (Anahata): the cardiac plexus

The cardiac plexus surrounds the heart and helps regulate its rhythm. This is also where the vagus nerve, the main nerve of rest and repair, sends many branches. The thymus gland sits just above the heart. Love, compassion and the feeling of safety in connection gather here.

5. Throat chakra (Vishuddha): the cervical and pharyngeal plexus

The nerves of the neck serve the voice box, tongue and throat. The vagus nerve also passes through here, which may be why humming, chanting and singing can feel so calming. The thyroid gland is linked to this chakra of truth and expression.

6. Third eye (Ajna): the brain, pineal and pituitary

Between the brows and deep in the center of the head sit the pituitary and the tiny pineal gland, which responds to light and dark and helps set our sleep rhythm. Intuition, imagination and inner sight belong here.

7. Crown (Sahasrara): the cerebral cortex

The crown sits over the top of the brain, the vast network that weaves all our senses and thoughts together. Many traditions describe the crown as the thousand-petaled lotus. Neuroscience describes a brain with tens of billions of neurons. Both point to something vast.

The vagus nerve: a thread through the heart chakras

The vagus nerve wanders from the brainstem down through the throat, the heart and the belly. It is a major part of the "rest and digest" system. Notice how it passes right through the throat, heart and solar plexus chakras. This is one reason simple practices like slow breathing, humming and placing a hand on your heart feel so settling. They speak to the body and the energy body at the same time.

A spine-wide calming practice

Sit or lie comfortably. You will move slowly up the spine, breathing into each center.

  1. Root: Press your feet into the floor. Breathe into your hips and legs. Silently say, "I am safe."
  2. Sacral: Rest a hand below the navel. Let the belly be soft. "I can feel."
  3. Solar plexus: Hand above the navel. Breathe warmth into the stomach. "I can act."
  4. Heart: Hand on the chest. Breathe slowly, like ocean waves. "I can love."
  5. Throat: Hum a long, low "mmm" for three breaths. Feel the vibration in the neck. "I can speak."
  6. Third eye: Close your eyes and soften the space between the brows. "I can see."
  7. Crown: Imagine soft light resting on the top of your head. "I am connected."

Finish with three slow breaths that run all the way from tailbone to crown and back down.

Why this matters for awakening

When energy rises during awakening, many people feel it in their spine and nervous system: tingling, heat, waves of emotion, changes in sleep. Knowing this map helps you meet those sensations with calm instead of fear. To understand that process, read How Kundalini Awakening Happens, and to work with the elements of each center, see The Chakras and the Elements.
