Each of the lower five chakras is linked with one of the great elements of nature. The root is earth, the sacral is water, the solar plexus is fire, the heart is air and the throat is space, also called ether. Above them, the third eye is linked with light or mind, and the crown with pure consciousness, sometimes simply called spirit. As energy rises up the spine, it moves from the densest element to the subtlest, from solid earth to open sky.

This is one of the most practical maps in energy work. If you know a chakra's element, you know how to nourish it: ground the earth, let the water flow, feed the fire, open the air and give space room to breathe.

Where this teaching comes from

In the tantric texts that describe the chakras, each of the lower five centers is associated with a tattva, an element or principle of reality, along with a shape (yantra), a seed sound (bija mantra) and a color. These details vary between traditions, and modern teachers have added colors that match the rainbow. What stays constant is the beautiful idea that your body is made of the same elements as the world.

The chakras and their elements

Root: earth

Shape: square. Seed sound: LAM.

Earth is solid, steady and dependable. A balanced root feels like having your feet firmly on the ground: safe, patient, present. When earth is low, we feel scattered, anxious or "not here."

To nourish earth: walk barefoot, garden, eat root vegetables, sit with your back against a tree, keep a regular routine.

Sacral: water

Shape: crescent moon. Seed sound: VAM.

Water flows, adapts and feels. The sacral chakra is the home of emotion, pleasure and creativity. Too little water feels rigid and numb. Too much feels flooded.

To nourish water: swim or bathe, drink plenty of water, dance, let yourself cry, make something with your hands.

Solar plexus: fire

Shape: downward triangle. Seed sound: RAM.

Fire transforms: food into energy, ideas into action. The solar plexus holds will, confidence and digestion.

To nourish fire: sit in sunlight, move your body, keep one small promise to yourself, eat warm spiced meals.

Heart: air

Shape: six-pointed star, two triangles meeting. Seed sound: YAM.

Air is everywhere, connecting all living things through breath. The heart chakra is love, compassion and the balance between the lower and upper chakras, which is why its symbol is two triangles joining.

To nourish air: breathe deeply outdoors, practice gratitude, forgive one small thing, hug someone.

Throat: space (ether)

Shape: circle. Seed sound: HAM.

Space is the element that gives everything else room to exist. Sound travels through space, so the throat is the center of voice, truth and listening.

To nourish space: sing or hum, sit in silence, declutter a corner, speak one honest sentence.

Third eye: light (mind)

Seed sound: OM.

Beyond the five elements, the third eye is described as the realm of mind and inner light. Here we see patterns, symbols and intuition.

To nourish light: watch the sunrise or the stars, meditate, journal your dreams.

Crown: spirit (pure consciousness)

Often given no sound at all, only silence, the crown is beyond the elements. It is the awareness in which all the elements appear.

To nourish spirit: prayer, stillness, awe, service.

A seven-element balancing ritual

  1. Earth: Stand barefoot and feel your weight sink into the ground. Chant LAM three times.
  2. Water: Sip a glass of water slowly. Chant VAM.
  3. Fire: Light a candle and gaze at the flame. Chant RAM.
  4. Air: Take three long breaths with your hand on your heart. Chant YAM.
  5. Space: Close your eyes and listen to the farthest sound you can hear. Chant HAM.
  6. Light: Picture a small sun between your brows. Chant OM.
  7. Spirit: Sit in silence for one minute. Simply be.

Reading your elements

Ask yourself today: Which element do I have too much of, and which too little? Racing thoughts often mean too much air and too little earth. Feeling stuck often means too much earth and too little fire. Feeling flooded means too much water. The remedy is usually the opposite element, offered gently.

Your hands hold these same elements. Learn how in What Each Finger Means, and for the alchemist's view of the elements as a path of inner transformation, read Spiritual Alchemy.
