Your aura is not a still cloud of color around you. It is energy in motion. Life force flows up from the earth through your feet, rises through your chakras, moves out through your crown, hands and heart, and circles back around you in a living, breathing field. Even the word emotion holds this teaching: e-motion, energy in motion. When your feelings move freely, your field flows and glows. When feelings get stuck, the aura can feel heavy, patchy or thin.

A flowing aura is also a protected aura. Just as a moving river stays clear while a still pond gathers debris, an aura in motion naturally clears and strengthens itself.

How energy moves through you

Energy teachers describe several natural currents:

  • Earth current: energy rising from the ground through the soles of the feet, up the legs and into the root. This grounds and steadies you.
  • Sky current: energy entering through the crown and flowing down. This inspires and uplifts.
  • Heart current: energy radiating out from the chest in every direction, the heart torus.
  • Hand current: energy flowing out through the palms when you touch, heal, create or give.
  • Circulation: many traditions, including Taoist practice, describe energy rising up the back and flowing down the front of the body in a continuous loop, sometimes called the microcosmic orbit.

Emotions are meant to move

Feelings are not problems. They are weather moving through your field. Joy expands it. Grief rains through it and then clears. Anger brings heat and can burn away what no longer serves. The trouble comes when feelings get stuck because we are afraid to feel them, are too busy, or were taught not to.

Stuck energy often shows up as:

  • Feeling heavy, foggy or "not like yourself"
  • Taking on other people's moods easily
  • Tension in the same places (jaw, shoulders, belly)
  • Getting drained by certain people or places
  • Feeling raw, exposed or easily startled

The aura as a protective field

A healthy aura is often described as having a gentle outer edge, like the skin of a bubble. It lets love and good energy in and lets heavy energy slide off. When we are exhausted, overwhelmed or holding a lot of unfelt emotion, that edge can feel thin, and we absorb more from others.

The best protection is not building walls. It is keeping your energy moving and keeping your own light strong, so there is less room for anything else.

Seven ways to keep your energy flowing

  1. Shake it off. Animals literally shake after stress. Stand and shake your hands, arms, legs and whole body for one minute.
  2. Breathe all the way down. A slow breath into the belly moves energy out of the head and back into the body.
  3. Move daily. Walk, dance, stretch. Movement moves energy.
  4. Feel one feeling fully. When an emotion arises, give it 90 seconds of full attention and breath. Many feelings pass on their own when we stop resisting them.
  5. Use water. Showers, baths, swimming and rain all clear the field. A salt bath is a classic energy cleanse.
  6. Sweep your aura. With your hands a few inches from your body, sweep from the crown down to the feet, as if brushing off dust, then shake your hands toward the earth.
  7. Seal your field. Picture a soft golden light around your whole body, about an arm's length out, gently glowing. Say, "Only love may enter here."

Many people like a physical ritual for aura care: a selenite wand for sweeping, black tourmaline for steadiness, or gentle smoke for clearing a space.

A morning aura flow practice

Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Breathe in and imagine earth energy rising through your feet to your heart. Breathe out and let it spread through your arms. Breathe in and draw sky energy down through your crown to your heart. Breathe out and let the two meet and expand into a glowing egg of light around you. Repeat seven times. You are now moving, flowing and protected.
