In many mystical traditions, the moment of deep spiritual awakening is described as breaking the cosmic egg. The shell is the small, separate sense of self we have lived inside. When it cracks, light floods in from above through the crown and spreads through the body's subtle channels, the 72,000 nadis of yogic teaching, until the whole being feels illuminated. People who describe this often speak of a sense of boundlessness, deep peace and a love that seems to have no edges.
The egg does not break because we smash it. It cracks open when what is inside has grown too big to stay hidden.

The cosmic egg in world traditions
The image of an egg at the beginning of everything appears across cultures:
- In the Vedic tradition, the universe begins as Hiranyagarbha, the "golden womb" or golden egg, from which creation unfolds.
- In Orphic Greek myth, the world is born from a silver cosmic egg wrapped by a serpent.
- In Chinese myth, the giant Pangu sleeps inside a cosmic egg and separates heaven and earth when he awakens.
- In 1971, writer Joseph Chilton Pearce used the phrase in his book The Crack in the Cosmic Egg to describe how our beliefs form a shell around reality, and how awakening cracks it.
Spiritually, the egg is both the universe and the self. Each of us is a small cosmic egg, and awakening is the hatching.
The 72,000 nadis
The yogic texts describe a vast network of subtle channels called nadis, a word that comes from the Sanskrit for "flow" or "stream." The Hatha Yoga Pradipika speaks of 72,000 of them, while another text, the Shiva Samhita, gives an even larger number. Through these channels flows prana, the life force.
Most nadis are said to be partly blocked in ordinary life, by stress, old emotions and habits. As practice and grace clear them, energy flows more freely. When kundalini rises fully and the crown opens, the teaching says, light moves through all of them at once. This is the "lighting up" mystics describe.
The crown opening
The crown chakra, sahasrara, means "thousand-petaled." At its top, the texts describe a subtle opening called the Brahmarandhra, "the door of Brahman," near the soft spot on a baby's head. In awakening traditions, it is through this doorway that the individual self meets the infinite.
People who describe a crown opening often mention:
- Pressure, tingling or a sensation of something opening at the top of the head
- An experience of bright light, inside or all around
- A deep stillness in which thoughts seem far away
- A feeling of love for everything, without reason
- A dissolving of the boundary between "me" and "everything else"
After the egg breaks: integration
The most important part of any awakening is what comes after. A crack in the egg can feel blissful, and it can also feel disorienting. Old structures fall away before new ones grow. Traditional teachers emphasize:
- Grounding. Bring the light down into the feet and the earth. Eat warm food, walk, rest.
- Simplicity. Keep life simple for a while. Fewer decisions, more nature.
- Kindness. The fruit of real awakening is kindness. If an experience leads to feeling superior, gently return to humility.
- Support. Share with someone experienced. You are not meant to integrate alone.
The point of breaking the egg is not to fly away from the world. It is to finally be born into it.

A gentle crown meditation
- Sit with a straight spine. Feel your feet and your seat.
- Breathe slowly and imagine a soft golden light resting just above your head.
- With each inhale, let a little of that light flow down through the crown into your body, like warm honey.
- With each exhale, let it spread into every channel: arms, legs, fingers, toes.
- Do not force any opening. Simply let light visit.
- Finish by sending the light down into the earth, saying, "I am here. I am home."
