A kundalini or spiritual awakening and a mental health crisis can look surprisingly alike from the outside, and sometimes from the inside too. Both can bring intense energy, strong emotions, sleeplessness, unusual perceptions and a sense that reality is shifting. The most helpful way to tell them apart is not to look for one dramatic sign, but to ask a few gentle questions: Can I still take care of myself? Am I safe? Does this experience leave me more loving and connected over time, or more frightened and isolated? And most important of all: the two are not either-or. A real awakening can also need real support. Reaching out is never a failure of faith.

If you are reading this because you are scared right now, please pause here and read the next box first.

If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, please reach out now. In the US you can call or text 988 (Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) any time, day or night. You can also text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line). If someone's life is at risk, call 911 or your local emergency number. Outside the US, please contact your local emergency or crisis service. You deserve support, and you are not alone.

Why the two can look so similar

Spiritual traditions have long described awakening as a process of breaking open: old beliefs fall away, energy moves, emotions surface. The psychiatrist Stanislav Grof and his wife Christina coined the term spiritual emergency in the 1980s to describe awakening experiences so intense they become a crisis. They founded the Spiritual Emergence Network to help people find understanding support. In 1994, the diagnostic manual used by mental health professionals added a category for "religious or spiritual problem," recognizing that spiritual experiences can be distressing without being an illness.

At the same time, conditions like depression, mania, psychosis and severe anxiety are real and deserve real care. Some of their signs, such as racing energy, not sleeping, hearing or seeing things others do not, or feeling chosen for a special mission, can resemble descriptions of awakening.

Gentle differences people often notice

These are not tests or diagnoses. They are reflections to help you notice what is happening and talk about it with someone you trust.

Often more like awakening:

  • You can still sleep at least some, eat, and handle basic daily tasks
  • Insights feel humbling, loving and curious, even when they are big
  • You want to share and connect, and you can hear other people's views
  • Intense moments come in waves and you have calmer periods between them
  • You can describe what is happening and wonder about it

Often a sign to seek support now:

  • Several nights with little or no sleep
  • Being unable to eat, wash, work or care for children or yourself
  • Hearing voices that command, threaten or frighten you
  • Feeling that others are plotting against you, or being unable to trust anyone
  • Certainty that you must take urgent, risky action for a special mission
  • Constant terror, despair or hopelessness
  • Any thoughts of harming yourself or someone else

If any of the second list is true, please reach out today. That is not giving up on your spiritual path. It is protecting the body and mind your spirit lives in.

Why support helps, even for a "true" awakening

Many traditions never expected people to go through kundalini alone. Seekers lived with teachers, communities and daily routines that held them. Today many people go through intense experiences in isolation, often while working, parenting and scrolling. Support might look like:

  • A trusted friend or family member who checks on you
  • A counselor or therapist, ideally one open to spiritual experiences
  • A spiritual teacher experienced with energy awakenings
  • The Spiritual Emergence Network (US), which offers a free directory of professionals familiar with spiritual crises at spiritualemergence.org
  • The International Spiritual Emergence Network for other countries at spiritualemergencenetwork.org
  • The NAMI HelpLine in the US, 1-800-950-6264, for information and support

Getting help from a qualified professional does not erase the sacredness of what you are going through. A good helper can hold both.

Gentle grounding while you get support

These are comfort practices, not replacements for care:

  1. Pause intense practices. Set aside long meditations, strong breathwork, fasting and energy-raising work for now.
  2. Eat warm, grounding food at regular times: soups, root vegetables, rice, eggs, beans.
  3. Protect sleep. Dim lights early, put devices away, keep the same bedtime.
  4. Touch the earth. Walk slowly outside. Feel your feet. Name five things you can see.
  5. Stay connected. Let at least one person know how you are doing each day.
  6. Limit intense content. Step away from videos, forums and readings that increase fear or urgency.
  7. Be very kind to yourself. Nothing about this means you are broken or behind.

A gentle note: This article offers spiritual perspective and gentle comfort. It is not medical or psychological advice and cannot diagnose anything. If you are worried about your mental health or someone else's, please contact a qualified mental health professional or a crisis line. In the US, call or text 988 any time.

For families and friends

If someone you love is going through something intense, stay calm and curious. Listen more than you explain. Help them with sleep, food and rest. Avoid arguing about whether their experience is "spiritual" or "illness." Instead ask, "How can I help you feel safe right now?" If safety is at risk, call for help.

A closing word of love

Awakening is not a race and not a test of how much you can endure alone. The light within you is patient. It will still be there after you have slept, eaten, cried, been held and talked to someone kind. Let yourself be cared for. That, too, is spiritual.
