Many meditators describe a moment when the inside of the head seems to fill with light. It may begin as a soft glow behind closed eyes, a bright point between the brows, or a sense of dawn breaking in the center of the skull. Sometimes it spreads until the whole head, and then the whole body, feels luminous. Mystical traditions describe this as the awakening of the light body, and one of the most beloved images of the light body is the merkaba, a shape of two interlocking pyramids of light that surrounds and carries the soul.
Inner light is one of the oldest signs of deep meditation. Saints, yogis and sages across cultures have described it in remarkably similar words.

Light inside the head across traditions
- In yoga, the ajna chakra and the space in the center of the head are linked with inner light (jyoti). Some practices are called jyoti dhyana, meditation on light.
- In Christian mysticism, many describe the "uncreated light," a divine radiance seen in prayer, linked to the light of the Transfiguration.
- In Tibetan Buddhism, practitioners speak of the clear light of the mind, and advanced meditators are said to dissolve into a "rainbow body."
- In Sufi teachings, inner lights of different colors mark stages on the path.
Science has also taken interest in the small pineal gland deep in the center of the brain. It responds to light and dark through the eyes and helps regulate our sleep rhythm through melatonin. Many spiritual teachers see it as the physical anchor of the third eye. We hold that link as a beautiful symbol rather than a proven fact.
What is the merkaba?
The word Merkabah is Hebrew for "chariot." Early Jewish mystics practiced Merkabah mysticism, contemplating the fiery chariot-throne of God described in the vision of the prophet Ezekiel, with its wheels within wheels.
In the 1990s, modern teachers, especially Drunvalo Melchizedek, popularized the "Mer-Ka-Ba" as a living field of light shaped like a star tetrahedron: two pyramids, one pointing up and one pointing down, interlocked to form a three-dimensional star. In this teaching, the upward pyramid is masculine, sun, spirit rising, and the downward pyramid is feminine, earth, spirit descending. Spinning in opposite directions, they create a field of light around the body that is said to support higher consciousness.
Signs people describe as the light body awakens
- Seeing light with eyes closed, especially white, violet or gold
- Feeling lighter in the body or a sense of expansion
- Tingling or warmth at the crown and brow
- Deep peace and love without a reason
- Synchronicities and a feeling of being guided
These are experiences to enjoy and let go of, not achievements to collect. The true fruit of the light body is kindness.
A gentle merkaba meditation
- Ground first. Sit with feet on the floor. Breathe into your belly. Feel the earth below you.
- Light in the head. Bring your attention to the center of your head. Imagine a tiny sun there. Let it grow brighter with each breath until it fills your skull with soft light.
- Let it spread. Let the light flow down your neck, shoulders, chest and arms, all the way to your feet.
- Build the star. Picture a pyramid of golden light pointing up around your body, its tip above your head. Then a pyramid of silver light pointing down, its tip below your feet. See them interlock into a star.
- Let it spin. Imagine the golden pyramid slowly turning one way and the silver one turning the other, creating a soft disc of light around your heart.
- Rest. Sit inside your star of light for a few minutes. Breathe. Feel safe and held.
- Return. Let the spinning slow. Send roots of light from your feet into the earth. Open your eyes.

Staying grounded with inner light
Light experiences can be beautiful and also stirring. After practice, eat something, walk outside and drink water. If inner light experiences come with distress, sleeplessness or fear, rest from the practice and read Kundalini Awakening or Mental Health Crisis?.
