We live in a busy, uncertain world, and most of us are surrounded by information and advertising from the moment we wake up. Inner peace is not something you have to earn. It is already there, waiting beneath the noise. These six simple steps give it room to rise to the surface.

A simple formula for peace
After years of exploring meditation, including approaches drawn from Buddhism and other great traditions, I settled on a simple six step formula to step out of overload and let my mind rest. You can use it as written or adapt it so it fits your life.
Step 1: Find a cool, quiet place

Begin somewhere you feel safe and undisturbed. That might be the grass in your garden, a spot near a river or, in a city, a quiet corner of your living room. A firm cushion indoors or a natural fiber mat outdoors works beautifully.
- Keep noise low. Sirens, traffic and leaf blowers can break a meditation quickly, so choose a time and place that is calm.
- Remove distractions. Let the people around you know you need a few quiet minutes, and silence your phone.
- Feel safe. It is hard to release your thoughts when part of you is on guard.
- Get comfortable. A session often lasts about twenty minutes, and the first ten may be spent settling. Sit on the floor, lean against a wall or use a chair. Avoid the couch, which makes it easy to fall asleep.
Step 2: Use a light incense

When you first stop after a busy day, your body may still feel buzzy. A gentle scent such as lavender helps mark the shift from doing to being. Choose natural, soft fragrances that fill the room without overpowering it. Buy from a reputable source, keep incense away from anything flammable and open a window in small rooms. If scent is not for you, a simple candle is lovely too. You can find options in our Incense, Candles and Ritual collection.
Step 3: Put on some quiet music

Choose music that slows you down rather than lifts your heart rate. Flowing water, birdsong and other sounds of nature are popular choices. Many people also enjoy slow classical pieces, chakra meditation music or the tone of a singing bowl, struck once at the start and allowed to fade. If you like sound as part of your practice, browse our Singing Bowls and Sound collection.
Step 4: Focus on your breathing

Sit cross legged with your hands resting on your knees, palms open. If that is uncomfortable, stretch your legs out or sit in a chair with your feet flat. Close your eyes, breathe in deeply and exhale slowly. As you relax, thoughts of the day may resurface. That is normal. Gently set them aside and return to the breath.
If letting go feels hard, try counting. Breathe in and picture the number one as you exhale. On the next breath, picture the number two. Keep going. If your mind wanders to dinner plans or tomorrow's meeting, simply start again at one. Over time, focus comes more easily. This counting breath is also lovely at night when you find it hard to switch off.
Step 5: Clear your mind

Once your breathing is steady, allow your mind to grow clear. This takes patience and may not feel natural for many sessions. Rather than trying to think of nothing, rest your attention on the space around you, eyes closed, and simply be. Many people notice calm, a feeling of lightness or a gentle tingling in the body. These are not required. Simply let your experience be what it is.
Step 6: Feel the peace

Buddhist teachers describe meditation as a path that can take a lifetime. What many people find, even in their first sessions, is that when you let go of your surroundings and rest, it can feel like stepping into a whole new world. When your session is over, let your thoughts return slowly. Open your eyes, take in the room and give yourself a few minutes before returning to your day. Notice the calm that comes with you.
