Saying yes and no with care
Caring people often say yes before checking whether they have the energy. Try pausing before answering requests, even for a moment. You can say, "Let me check and get back to you," which gives you time to consider your real capacity.
When the answer is yes, make it a real yes with clear limits: "I can help for an hour on Saturday." When the answer is no, keep it kind and short: "I cannot take that on right now." You do not owe a long explanation.
If you want to help but cannot do what was asked, offer an honest alternative: a smaller task, a later date, or a resource. Clear consent protects relationships, because people can trust that your yes means yes.
