Exploring the maybe

Not every request needs an immediate yes or no. The space between can include "Let me think about it," "Yes, with these conditions," or "Not now, perhaps later."

Using this middle ground thoughtfully can lead to better agreements. It allows time to consider your capacity and to negotiate terms that work for everyone.

Be honest about your maybe, though. Leaving people waiting indefinitely is unkind. Give a timeframe for your answer, and follow through with a clear decision.

Practice a conditional yes

Someone asks you to lead a project. You are interested but worried about time. Instead of an anxious yes or a regretful no, there is a middle option that could work for everyone.

Next time you receive a request you are unsure about, try a conditional yes or a timed maybe. "I can do it if we push the deadline to next month," or "Let me think about it and answer by Thursday." Then follow through.

Notice how the middle path changes outcomes. Thoughtful conditions often lead to better agreements, and people appreciate clarity about what you can truly offer.
