Making promises you can keep

Big yeses feel generous in the moment but can become heavy later. Before agreeing, try shrinking the promise to a size you can actually keep: one hour instead of a whole afternoon, one task instead of the whole project.

Name the conditions clearly. "I can help on Saturday morning, but I need to leave by noon." Clear conditions protect both people from disappointment and make your yes trustworthy.

Then keep the agreement. A small promise kept builds more trust than a large promise broken. Over time, people learn that your yes means yes, and you learn to trust yourself too.

Practice the right sized yes

A friend asks you to help them move next Saturday. Your instinct is to say "of course," even though you have a busy week and know you will be exhausted. On the day, you show up tired and quietly resentful, and the help feels heavier for both of you.

Next time a request comes, pause and ask yourself what you can offer gladly. Then offer exactly that: "I can help for two hours in the morning," or "I cannot lift boxes, but I can bring lunch for everyone." Say it warmly and without apology.

Notice how the other person responds. Most people appreciate clarity, and they can plan around a smaller yes far better than around an overpromise that falls apart. You may also notice that you enjoy helping more when the yes fits your real capacity.
