Checking the calendar before saying yes

Saying yes on the spot can lead to overcommitment. Before agreeing to a request, look at your calendar and consider what the commitment will really require.

Count travel time, preparation, and recovery, not only the event itself. A two hour commitment can easily take half a day once everything is included.

It is fine to say, "Let me check my calendar and get back to you." This small pause helps you give yeses you can keep and keeps your schedule realistic.

Practice the calendar pause

Someone asks you to join a committee, help with an event, or meet for coffee. You say yes on the spot, then realize later that the week is already full and the commitment will require more time than you thought.

This week, respond to every new request with: "Let me check my calendar and get back to you by tomorrow." Then look honestly at the time required, including preparation, travel, and recovery, before deciding.

Notice how your answers change when you pause. Many people find they say yes to fewer things but enjoy those commitments more, and the people asking appreciate a reliable answer.
