Repair through action

Making amends means repairing harm, not just saying sorry. It begins with honestly acknowledging what you did and how it affected the other person.

Ask what would help, and listen to the answer. Repair may involve returning something, correcting a record, offering time, or simply changing behavior going forward.

Amends are often quiet, ongoing work rather than a single dramatic moment. Consistency over time shows that your regret is genuine and your change is real.

Plan one amends

Perhaps you borrowed something and never returned it, missed an important event, or spoke unkindly during a stressful time. The memory may resurface now and then, carrying a small weight of regret.

Choose one situation where amends feel appropriate and safe. Write down what happened, how it may have affected the other person, and what repair might look like: returning an item, a sincere apology, an offer to help, or simply a changed behavior.

Take the step, then let the outcome be what it is. The other person may respond warmly or not at all. Making amends is about your integrity and care, and it often brings unexpected peace.
