Planning without fortune telling
Worrying about the future often involves making predictions: this will fail, they will leave, I will never manage. Predictions feel like knowledge but are usually guesses.
Notice when you are predicting, and remind yourself that the future is uncertain. Focus instead on what you can do today to prepare or improve the odds.
Fewer predictions can mean less anxiety and more presence. Plans remain helpful, and they work best when held flexibly rather than as fixed forecasts.
Catch and label predictions
Before a job interview, the mind might predict: they will not like me, I will freeze, I will never get a job like this. These thoughts feel like knowledge, yet they are guesses about a future that has not happened.
For one week, notice when you are making predictions about the future. Write them down and label each one "prediction." Then write one action you can take today that would help, regardless of how things turn out.
Review your list at the end of the week. Notice how many predictions were accurate and how the actions felt. Fewer predictions and more present action often bring calmer, more effective days.
